Talking to the Trainers: Against Online Training

To continue the debate over online teacher training, we heard from trainers who are opposed to online teacher training.

Although some of the trainers on the call moved parts of their training online due to the pandemic, each trainer expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of online teacher training.

Here are our main takeaways from the conversation

  • Online training lacks the development of interpersonal and teaching skills required to be a successful, in-person teacher.
  • A strong group dynamic is hard to replicate in an online course.
  • Adjustments cannot be carried out online, an in-person alternative is required.
  • Graduates from online courses should complete an in-person module before teaching in-person.
  • At home, a safe, sacred training space does not exist. Trainees may be easier distracted when learning remotely.

What do you think?
