Your syllabus is a short summary of your course manual. We may request a copy of your course manual at any point, and it's good to have a copy on hand for any students that request to see the course breakdown.
Your syllabus should clearly show the overview of the content covered on your course. Having this available sets the expectations for your students and they will understand exactly what they will know at the end of the course.
Your course description can be some bullet points or a short summary of the learning outcomes. You should include your contact and non-contact hours, remember to keep our course requirements in mind:
Content | Example Description |
Practice of asana, pranayama, etc. |
Approximately 30% of the total hours will be spent in the actual physical practice of asana which includes some pranayama. The asana practice follows the primary series of Ashtanga yoga. We will cover asana up to Tittibasana in the series but not further. Backbending and Inversions will be taught as separate modules |
Teaching practice & methods |
This course puts a lot of emphasis on actually learning to teach, and so 40% of the total hours are spent learning to teach, to use the voice, to structure and modify classes. A structured program to offer a Beginner’s course will be followed. |
Particular focus of the course |
The focus will be on correct anatomical alignment using Iyengar, adjusting, and the latest myofascial trains research |
Overall Aim |
The aim of the course is to make students confident to offer a Beginner’s course in Astanga yoga. |
What will graduate be able to do |
In addition to teaching Beginner’s courses, the graduate will have the tools to design their own program and to know how and when to modify asanas to suit individual needs |
How will the course be assessed |
The course is assessed continuously using self-feedback and trainer feedback. Students will be constantly mentored throughout the course and given advice. Students who do not meet the course requirements will be given the opportunity to improve any areas of weakness and be encouraged to pass at a later date |
As well as providing an overview of your course content, you should also provide a breakdown of your course. Let students know what each module will cover and how many hours will be spent on each topic.
